Lavanya Venkateswaran, senior economist for ASEAN and India at OCBC Group Research, identified the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand as the countries most vulnerable to the inflationary effects linked to El Niño. Malaysia and Vietnam are also considered at risk, though the potential impact there is described as meaningful but more narrowly focused.

Most countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region rely on food imports to meet domestic demand, which amplifies their exposure to import-driven inflation. Venkateswaran noted that higher international prices for key commodities will likely translate into increased food costs locally, contributing to broader inflation within these economies.

El Niño, a climate pattern characterized by warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, is known to disrupt weather patterns globally, often causing droughts and reduced agricultural yields in vulnerable regions. In Southeast Asia, this can threaten crop production and supply stability, thereby exerting upward pressure on food prices.

The report suggests that the inflationary risks posed by El Niño warrant close monitoring by policymakers, given the potential effects on consumer prices and economic stability in ASEAN countries.
