A 77-year-old man died after an alleged assault inside a Walmart store in Norfolk, Virginia, involving the parents of a teenage employee, according to authorities. Bert Atienza suffered blunt head trauma during the incident on June 7 and died the following day at a hospital, where medical officials classified his death as a homicide.

The confrontation reportedly began earlier that day while Atienza and his wife, Josephine, were shopping, having spent the morning at church. Josephine Atienza told investigators that a 17-year-old Walmart employee nearly struck her with a shopping cart and that Bert Atienza confronted the teenager. Following the exchange, the employee allegedly threw a can in the couple’s direction as they walked away.

The minor then reportedly contacted her parents, identified as Travis White, 44, and Erika Mitchell, 42, who subsequently came to the store to locate the Atienzas. Surveillance footage obtained by police shows Atienza browsing items when White and Mitchell approached and assaulted him while their daughter observed.

The video depicts Atienza being shoved from behind, grabbed, and punched. He was then pushed into a shelving unit, causing him to fall to the floor, where he was allegedly kicked by one of the adults. Nearby shoppers appeared to avoid intervening during the attack.

Emergency responders arrived at the Walmart around 3:20 p.m. after receiving reports of an assault. Josephine Atienza was seen holding her injured husband on the floor after the assault, recounting that he initially remained conscious but soon lost awareness. Bert Atienza was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries the next day.

Travis White and Erika Mitchell were arrested several days after the incident and are currently held without bond at the Norfolk jail. Their daughter has also been charged with assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to commit a felony. She remains in the Norfolk juvenile detention center, with her name withheld due to her status as a minor.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the assault, with investigators reviewing the surveillance footage and witness statements. No additional details regarding the motive beyond the initial dispute have been released.
