Elon Musk has released what appears to be the first artificial intelligence-generated trailer for Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, using his AI platform Grok Imagine. The nearly three-minute video was shared on Musk’s social media account X, accompanied by the caption “Made with Grok Imagine.” The trailer features key scenes from the ancient Greek narrative, including Odysseus saying goodbye to his wife before departing for war, struggling through treacherous seas, and encountering the mythical Sirens.
The unveiling comes shortly after Musk announced his intention to produce a feature-length, “historically accurate” adaptation of The Odyssey by the end of 2026, generated entirely through AI technology.
Reactions to the trailer on social media were mixed, with some users expressing apprehension about the impact of AI on the future of filmmaking and the entertainment industry. Concerns were raised about potential consequences for actors and traditional production methods. One user questioned whether fully AI-generated movies could maintain consistent characters, voices, and settings, emphasizing the difficulties directors might face due to a lack of precise control over details.
Others acknowledged the technical achievement but noted that the trailer lacked the emotional depth and creative subtlety typical of human-driven cinema. Musk’s foray into AI filmmaking also follows previous controversies related to The Odyssey adaptations. Earlier this year, he criticised Christopher Nolan’s film version of the story, specifically objecting to the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, a choice Musk described as inconsistent with Homer’s original depiction. His comments sparked considerable backlash online.
Nolan’s adaptation features a star-studded cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron in supporting roles.
