Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has appointed Emily Knight as the city’s new chief of economic development, marking a strategic shift toward reinforcing Boston’s position as a center for innovation and technology. Knight, who currently leads The Engine, a nonprofit startup accelerator focused on advanced technologies, is set to begin her cabinet-level role on October 19.
Knight brings more than a decade of experience from The Engine, an organization founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that supports “tough tech” startups working on complex scientific challenges such as fusion energy and quantum computing. She initially served as chief operating officer before rising to chief executive of the accelerator based in Kendall Square, a key innovation district in Cambridge. Knight resides in Roslindale, a neighborhood in Boston.
Her appointment follows the departure of Segun Idowu, who stepped down as economic development chief in February. Idowu, formerly president of the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, concentrated on expanding supplier diversity, supporting small businesses, and fostering economic growth in Boston’s outer neighborhoods. In contrast, Knight’s selection reflects Mayor Wu’s renewed emphasis on cultivating the city’s startup ecosystem and enhancing engagement between business leaders and the innovation community.
Knight described part of her forthcoming efforts as continuing to convene groups and build connections, referring to earlier summits organized by the mayor’s office aimed at making Boston more attractive to entrepreneurs and investors. This approach aligns with Mayor Wu’s broader economic strategy in her second term, which prioritizes sustaining and growing the city’s competitive edge in technology sectors.
The transition underscores a shift in focus from neighborhood-level economic initiatives to strengthening Boston’s status as a national and global hub for science and innovation. Knight’s background in managing high-tech startups and facilitating collaboration across sectors is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing these goals under Mayor Wu’s administration.
