Emma Finucane delivered a standout performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, capturing the individual sprint title with a dominant display. The 23-year-old Welsh cyclist secured her second gold medal of the event after previously winning the team sprint alongside Lowri Thomas and Rhian Edmunds.

Finucane’s victory came after an impressive series of races, where she did not lose a single heat. She qualified fastest in the sprint with a Games record time of 10.322 seconds and continued her strong form by defeating her Welsh teammate Rhian Edmunds, who ultimately earned the bronze medal, in the semi-finals. In the final, Finucane overcame Olympic champion Sophie Capewell, a fellow member of the Great Britain team, to claim the top podium spot.

Following her win, Finucane dedicated her success to Wales and her family, noting the personal significance of the accomplishment. “I was riding for the Welsh dragon all night,” she said, adding that the support of her family, including her late father, played a motivating role.

Finucane now has the opportunity to complete a triple gold haul at the Games, as she will compete in the keirin event scheduled for the following day. Her achievements have already marked her as one of the standout athletes of the cycling competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
