Emma Raducanu, the British No. 1 tennis player, has withdrawn from this year’s US Open as she continues to recover from a stress fracture in her lower right leg. The 23-year-old made the decision to miss the final Grand Slam tournament of the season following consultations with her medical team.

Raducanu’s injury first emerged during the grass-court season, prompting her to pull out of Wimbledon just before her opening match. She has been advised to refrain from competitive play for at least three months. Recently, she was seen taking cautious steps back on court while wearing a protective boot during her recovery.

This development represents another setback in what has been a challenging year for Raducanu, who currently holds the world No. 49 ranking. Her pre-season preparations were disrupted by a bone bruise to her right foot, and she later suffered from a post-viral illness that sidelined her for over two months, starting in early February. After recovering, Raducanu returned to competition at the clay-court tournament in Strasbourg in May.

Despite these difficulties, Raducanu achieved a notable result in June, reaching the final at London’s Queen’s Club—the biggest final of her career since her 2021 US Open triumph, when she became the youngest qualifier ever to win a Major title at 18. However, the exertion at Queen’s Club is believed to have contributed to the recurrence of her injury.

Raducanu had rehired coach Andrew Richardson, who guided her to the 2021 US Open title, but their time working together on court has been limited due to her ongoing health and fitness issues. Her withdrawal from the US Open also means she will miss representing Great Britain in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Finals, scheduled to take place in late September in Shenzhen. Team GB’s squad for the event will now include players such as Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, Mika Stojsavljevic, and Jodie Burrage.

Meanwhile, British No. 2 Katie Boulter was recently defeated in the opening round of the National Bank Open in Toronto, losing 7-6 (3), 7-5 to Canadian player Kayla Cross.

Raducanu shared a positive update on social media from Switzerland, where she has been recuperating, describing her break as a “best reset ever.” However, questions remain over the timing of her return to competitive tennis, with some uncertainty about whether she will play again during the 2026 season.

In related news, Serena and Venus Williams are set to make their doubles debut at the Cincinnati Open later this month after receiving a wildcard entry. The sisters, winners of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles combined, last played doubles together at the 2022 US Open and recently withdrew from Wimbledon due to Serena’s ongoing knee issues.
