Households in the United Kingdom are set to face a significant increase in energy bills this summer, as the energy price cap is expected to rise by around £200 annually beginning July 1. The energy regulator Ofgem is scheduled to announce the updated price cap tomorrow, which will apply from July through September, capping the maximum daily standing charges and per-unit costs for gas and electricity for typical households.

Industry analysts Cornwall Insight have projected the new cap will reach approximately £1,850 per year, marking a 13% increase from the current £1,641 limit set in April. While warmer months may alleviate immediate costs for many families, growing concerns center on the upcoming October review, which coincides with higher energy demand as temperatures decline. This seasonal increase could bring even more substantial cost pressures during the winter months.

The anticipated price surge stems largely from geopolitical tensions following Iran’s obstruction of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit through which about 20% of global oil and gas shipments are transported. This disruption has contributed to rising wholesale energy prices worldwide, feeding into the higher cap forecast.

Campaign groups have called on the government to clarify how it plans to support vulnerable households through the expected challenges ahead. Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, emphasized the urgency for government intervention, stating that households require clear and early assistance rather than uncertainty extending into the colder months. “That means the government must act before winter to spell out what support will be available,” he said.

Despite mounting pressures, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has yet to announce immediate additional measures in her recent cost-of-living strategy. The government maintains that addressing the affordability crisis remains its highest priority, though specific plans for expanded aid have not been detailed as the energy price cap adjustment approaches.

With energy bills poised to increase sharply in the coming months, many households may face a challenging winter ahead unless further interventions are introduced to mitigate the financial impact.
