England have named a largely fresh squad for their upcoming white-ball tour of Australia next month, including the call-up of 18-year-old Thomas Rew, who is set to make his international debut. The tour, scheduled to last four weeks, features three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) starting on November 13, followed by a five-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series.
Rew, a right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper from Somerset, will join the T20 squad as one of four uncapped players. He captained England at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year and recently secured his first professional development contract. Should he debut on this tour, Rew would become the third-youngest player to represent England at any level, behind only Rehan Ahmed and Brian Close, and would also set the record as the youngest Englishman to play against Australia.
In addition to Rew, uncapped Hampshire fast bowler Eddie Jack, 21, has been included in the T20 squad. Jack has limited T20 experience but is valued for his raw pace and will have the opportunity to gain international exposure. Henry Crocombe, 25, who recently signed a two-year contract and is set to move from Sussex to Surrey, continues in both the ODI and T20 squads. Jacob Bethell, who missed recent cricket due to a knee injury, has recovered and returns to the ODI squad.
The ODI side, led by captain Harry Brook, will also feature well-known fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, and Josh Tongue, who will participate in the three ODIs before taking a break prior to the Test series against South Africa. The ODI team is close to full strength, with the exception of Jos Buttler, who remains sidelined due to ongoing recovery from hamstring surgery.
The T20 squad will see several changes due to the absence of senior bowlers, who will focus on preparation for the upcoming Test series. This approach reflects England’s balancing act between maintaining momentum in limited-overs cricket and prioritizing Test performance, especially as selectors and coaches align under the guidance of Brendon McCullum and new Test head coach Stephen Fleming.
Notably, Brydon Carse remains excluded from selection following his brief pause due to disciplinary issues, with team management emphasizing that while technically available, he has been given time to resolve personal matters.
Squad continuity is maintained with key players such as captain Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, and Jacob Bethell participating in both formats. The tour follows a tri-series in Pakistan this month and serves as both a competitive challenge and a platform for emerging talent ahead of the Cricket World Cup scheduled for next year.
