England have included Sussex all-rounder James Coles in their squad for the upcoming Twenty20 series against India. The 22-year-old has yet to make his international debut but has recently made headlines with a career-best 224 not out in a County Championship match against Glamorgan earlier this month. Coles also impressed during last season’s T20 Blast, amassing 397 runs at an average of 33 and claiming 10 wickets, despite an economy rate just over nine.
Harry Brook will captain the England side for the five-match T20 series, maintaining his leadership role following his omission as Test captain for the home series against New Zealand. Notably, Test opener Ben Duckett, who was part of England’s squad during their semi-final loss to India at this year’s T20 World Cup, has not been selected.
Coles, who was signed by London Spirit in the Hundred tournament for £390,000 this year, returns alongside Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Saqib Mahmood. Meanwhile, Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton remain sidelined due to injury.
Selector Marcus North commented on the squad, describing Coles as “an exciting addition” who has earned his place. North also noted that the larger squad size was intended to provide flexibility, given that the T20 series is scheduled to begin shortly after the conclusion of the Test series against New Zealand.
The five-match series will start at Chester-le-Street on July 1 and conclude in Southampton on July 11.
