England midfielder Lexi Potter made her senior international debut in the Lionesses’ 5-0 victory over Greece at Leicester, overcoming pre-match nerves and a last-minute mishap to deliver a composed performance. The win secured England’s place in a World Cup play-off final against Ukraine later this year, moving them one step closer to qualification for the 2024 tournament in Brazil.
Potter, 20, who plays regularly for Chelsea in the Women’s Super League, was introduced as a substitute around the 60th minute. Despite a foul denying her an opportunity to score, she impressed England manager Sarina Wiegman with her ability to settle into the game and contribute effectively on both defensive and attacking phases.
Wiegman acknowledged Potter’s initial nerves but praised her adaptability and impact as the match progressed. “She had some nerves and that is completely normal. But as the game went on she found her feet,” Wiegman said. “She found the connection with the defence but also playing forward and moments she had to press to take out the pass forward from the opponent. That was really good.”
Potter described the experience as “really special,” highlighting the excitement and pressure she felt before entering the pitch. “It was a bit of a rush before the game and I actually lost my phone, so I was a bit nervous. But once I got on the pitch and started playing I really enjoyed it,” she said. “It was a dream come true. When you’re young it’s something you dream of and it was a special moment, one that I will always remember. It took a bit of time to grow into the game but there’s more to come.”
England’s upcoming fixture against Ukraine will be contested over two legs as part of the World Cup qualification process. The away match is scheduled for November 26 at a venue yet to be announced, while the decisive second leg will take place at Wembley Stadium on December 5. A victory over Ukraine will secure England’s place in next summer’s tournament in Brazil.
