England’s preparations for their Nations Championship opener against Australia on November 8 have been clouded by concerns over the fitness of fly-half Fin Smith. The Northampton player sustained a calf injury during the second half of a match against Leicester on Saturday, forcing him to miss the national squad’s scheduled three-day training camp in Bagshot this week.
Smith’s potential absence represents a significant setback for England, given his role as the starting fly-half in all three Tests during the July international window and his key contributions to Northampton Saints’ domestic title success last season. England’s management remains cautiously optimistic that Smith will recover in time for the fixture, although the limited training window ahead of the match poses challenges for head coach Steve Borthwick’s preparations.
In response to the injury, Borthwick has called up Gloucester’s Charlie Atkinson as cover at fly-half. Marcus Smith and George Ford also remain in the squad as specialist options at the No. 10 position. Fin Smith has established himself as the preferred choice in the role since replacing Ford following England’s defeat to Ireland in the Six Nations, with Marcus Smith’s last start at fly-half dating back to the opening round of the 2025 Six Nations against Ireland in Dublin.
An official update on Fin Smith’s condition is expected on Tuesday amid ongoing injury concerns affecting other squad members. Bath’s Guy Pepper was forced off with apparent discomfort during Friday’s match against Gloucester, while Benhard Janse van Rensburg has yet to return following a heavy concussion sustained in Bristol’s second Premiership match of the season. Inside centre Seb Atkinson is also sidelined from training this week but has not ruled out playing for Gloucester against Northampton on Saturday. This leaves Borthwick and England’s other specialist centres—Henry Slade, Joe Marchant, Max Ojomoh, and Fraser Dingwall—in a holding pattern ahead of the formal squad announcement scheduled for next Monday.
Joe Marchant, back in national team contention for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, expressed enthusiasm about his recall. After moving to Stade Français in Paris post-World Cup and being told his England career was likely over, Marchant regained eligibility following his transfer to Sale Sharks. The 30-year-old, who married Alan Shearer’s daughter Hollie this year, reiterated his longstanding ambition to represent England. “When I was a kid I wanted to play for England and that’s not changed,” he said.
With less than two weeks until the clash with Australia, England’s squad will continue to monitor player fitness, aiming to field their strongest side as they kick off their Nations Championship campaign.
