England’s cricket authorities have arranged a 50-over warm-up match ahead of their upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, aiming to avoid the preparation issues that contributed to their recent Ashes defeat. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Brendon McCullum's team will face a Western Australia XI at the WACA Ground in Perth on November 7, six days prior to the start of the ODI series.

The decision comes after England's Test team faced criticism for their limited build-up during last winter’s Ashes campaign, which ended in a 4-1 series loss to Australia. At that time, the team only played one warm-up match against the England Lions at Lilac Hill, a club ground where playing conditions significantly differed from those at Perth’s Optus Stadium, the venue for the first Test where England were defeated inside two days.

Richard Thompson, chair of the ECB, acknowledged the shortcomings of the previous preparation and confirmed the board’s efforts to address them ahead of the upcoming tour. “There is a lot that was learned,” Thompson said, “Mistakes were made and we’ve corrected that now.”

The additional match against a strong Western Australia side is expected to provide England’s white-ball squad with better acclimatization to local match conditions and help sharpen their performance ahead of the series. The tour, scheduled for later this year, will see England compete in One Day International matches, reflecting a strategic emphasis on improving readiness and competitiveness in Australian conditions following last season’s challenges.
