England’s World Cup supporters are undertaking extensive journeys to cheer on the national team as it competes in the United States, demonstrating a strong commitment to following their squad across the continent.
Among these dedicated fans are Matt Burgess and George Ousby, both 32 and from Bromley, Greater London, who embarked on a 19-hour road trip covering approximately 1,300 miles. Their route stretched from Winnipeg, Canada, through South Dakota and Oklahoma, culminating in Dallas, Texas, where they watched England’s victory over Croatia.
From Vancouver, Canada, several fans made the trip to support the Three Lions, including Tom Marsh, 39, originally from Brighton, who wore a goalkeeper’s jersey resembling that of England’s Jordan Pickford. Marsh said his friends urged him to don the kit due to his resemblance to the national team’s goalkeeper. Joining him were Joe Salazar, 38, from Blackburn, Lancashire, and Mike Neale, 36, from Bristol, who also expressed enthusiasm about the trip and the hospitality experienced during their travels.
The international reach of England’s fanbase was further highlighted by siblings David and Michelle Griernier, who journeyed approximately 8,580 miles from Sydney, Australia. They arrived in the U.S. just in time to attend the match against Croatia. David, 48, said the trip had been planned over several months and noted that they primarily came to watch Australia’s games but made a point to support England as well.
Meanwhile, a civil servant from London, 64-year-old Garford Beck, is undertaking a lengthy bus journey to follow England’s next match against Ghana in Boston. Beck intends to travel by Greyhound bus from Dallas—a trip estimated to last around 40 hours and cost £135—stopping in cities including Nashville, New York, Memphis, Jackson, Knoxville, and Charlottesville. He remarked that the journey is as much about experiencing the different places and meeting people as it is about the football.
From California, Brad Rippe, 55, and five friends also made the trip to Dallas. Rippe described England’s performance as “amazing” and praised the team’s goals. He added that the World Cup serves as a unique opportunity to bring people together regardless of their origins.
These stories illustrate the lengths to which England’s supporters are going to follow their team through the tournament, underscoring the passion and diversity of the fanbase during this global sporting event.
