England has named a 16-man squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) tri-series in Pakistan, which will also feature Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The tournament marks the next phase in England’s ongoing efforts to rebuild their white-ball team ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
The squad selection reflects a blend of established players, returning internationals, and emerging talent. Notably, three uncapped players—Mason Crane from Glamorgan, Sussex’s Henry Crocombe, and James Coles—have been included. Crane has drawn attention this year with his all-round performances, while Crocombe and Coles have previously been part of England squads but have yet to make their international debuts.
With regular wicketkeeper Jos Buttler sidelined by injury, former captain Joe Root is set to provide veteran experience alongside captain Harry Brook. Openers Ben Duckett and Tom Banton are expected to retain their roles at the top of the order, with Jordan Cox aiming to consolidate his promising early performances. Banton’s recall is particularly significant following his maiden ODI century against Sri Lanka, which has bolstered England’s attacking options.
The bowling contingent features a mix of pace and spin options. Jofra Archer has been rested for the Pakistan series, but Adil Rashid returns after recovering from a hand injury. Sam Curran is also back in the fold after a groin issue. The pace attack will be supplemented by Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Sonny Baker, and Jamie Overton, while Liam Dawson provides additional left-arm spin and batting depth.
England’s inclusion of Crane, Crocombe, and Coles signals a strategic broadening of the talent pool as the team gears up for the 2027 World Cup. Following the Pakistan tri-series, England face a challenging schedule, starting with a tour of Australia where they will play three ODIs and five T20 internationals. This series will offer captain Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum further opportunities to refine their white-ball tactics in unfamiliar conditions.
Former England batter Kevin Pietersen will continue to contribute as a specialist white-ball mentor, bringing his experience and aggressive batting philosophy to McCullum’s staff through the winter and into the World Cup preparations.
England’s winter itinerary also includes a tour of South Africa featuring three Tests and three ODIs. The Test series, beginning on December 17 in Johannesburg, will be Stephen Fleming’s first major assignment as England’s Test head coach. The subsequent ODI series in Paarl will offer another critical rehearsal for England’s white-ball squad, with South Africa set to co-host the 2027 World Cup.
The squad for the Pakistan tri-series is: Harry Brook (captain), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Henry Crocombe, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, and Josh Tongue.
