Digby, an English sparkling wine producer co-founded in 2013 by Clough and his husband, Jason Humphries, has taken significant steps to reduce the environmental impact of its products. Recognizing the considerable carbon footprint involved in the production and distribution of sparkling wine, the company has focused on innovative measures to lower emissions associated with each bottle.

One key initiative involves the use of Ecova bottles weighing 835 grams, which are approximately 15 percent lighter than traditional Champagne bottles. This weight reduction contributes to decreased emissions during both the manufacturing process and transportation stages. Depending on the destination, Digby estimates the carbon footprint of each bottle ranges between 1.2 kilograms and 1.75 kilograms of carbon dioxide.

Additional efforts to reduce environmental impact include the adoption of lower-carbon foils and the use of recycled materials in packaging. The company also prioritizes shipping its wine by sea rather than air, a method that further minimizes carbon emissions linked to distribution.

Clough emphasizes that these measures do not compromise the quality of the wine but rather position English sparkling wine as a more sustainable alternative to imported options. This approach aligns with broader trends seeking to balance environmental responsibility with consumer demand for premium beverage products.
