Enzo Maresca, Manchester City’s assistant coach, underscored the club’s desire to retain midfielder Rodri amid ongoing speculation about a possible transfer to Real Madrid. The Spanish player, who recently underwent back surgery, is expected to return to Manchester next month despite reported interest from the Spanish club.

Rodri’s contract with Manchester City expires next summer, and efforts to secure an extension have so far been unsuccessful. Real Madrid’s manager, Jose Mourinho, is reportedly keen to reunite Rodri with Bernardo Silva at the Santiago Bernabéu, although any potential offer may hinge on the sale of Aurelien Tchouameni.

Addressing the situation, Maresca emphasized the player’s value, saying that any manager would want Rodri, highlighting his importance to the team, particularly given the demanding schedule where matches occur every three days. However, Maresca noted that the midfielder’s immediate focus is on recovery and rest following his recent surgery and the World Cup campaign.

“There has been no recent discussion specifically about Rodri with sporting director Hugo Viana,” Maresca said, characterizing the transfer rumors as “speculation.” He confirmed that Rodri underwent surgery last Monday without complications and is currently taking time off before rejoining the squad.

In addition to retaining key players, Manchester City plans to be active in the transfer market. The club is seeking to strengthen its midfield and continues negotiations for Lille’s young midfielder, Ayyoub Bouaddi. On the goalkeeping front, Marseille’s Geronimo Rulli is expected to join as backup to first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Meanwhile, James Trafford is set to complete his transfer to Leeds United.
