A small Yorkie mix named Burt was found safe after spending 14 days lost in the wilderness near Thousand Oaks, Southern California. The 9-pound rescue dog survived a challenging environment that included rattlesnakes, coyotes, and mountain lions while traveling nearly a dozen miles and crossing a freeway, according to Shelter Hope founder Kim Sill.

Burt disappeared after becoming frightened during an attempt to load him into a car. Despite wearing his harness and leash, he bolted and remained missing for two weeks. During that time, local efforts to locate the dog included searches across rugged terrain known for its wildlife hazards.

Sill expressed relief at Burt’s return, highlighting the dog’s resilience and the challenging conditions he endured. The incident underscores the risks small pets face when escaping in wild areas, especially in regions inhabited by predators.
