The Esports World Cup (EWC) has unveiled its 2027 Qualifier Program, designed to expand access to its global championship by enabling tournament organizers and local esports communities worldwide to host official qualifying events. This initiative forms a key component of the broader Road to EWC ecosystem, which aims to engage 1.8 million players through more than 400 competitions during 2027.
The Road to EWC connects publisher-led leagues, international tournaments, and regional qualifiers to unite diverse competitive ecosystems under a single global championship umbrella. The newly launched Qualifier Program seeks to deepen those connections by fostering more localized opportunities for players to advance within their own communities.
Faisal bin Homran, chief product officer at the Esports Foundation, emphasized the program's goal of integrating established regional tournaments and grassroots events within the official EWC structure. “There are great tournaments and strong esports communities in every part of the world,” he said. “By bringing more of them into Road to EWC, we can create more opportunities for players to compete locally and give local esports ecosystems an official role in building the pathway to the Esports World Cup.”
The program offers two distinct qualification routes. The first, EWC Direct Qualifiers, enhances the existing collaboration with established esports competitions that maintain their own branding and commercial rights while adhering to EWC and publisher standards. These events provide players with a direct qualification pathway to the World Cup.
The second route, EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQs), introduces a new opportunity for grassroots organizers—including federations, associations, cyber cafes, universities, esports venues, and gaming festivals—to link local or newly created tournaments to the World Cup. These organizers can partner with the Esports Foundation to gain marketing support while running competitions under their own identities.
Winners of the Satellite LCQs gain guaranteed spots in the EWC LCQ tournaments scheduled for summer 2027, competing for a position at the EWC main event. The Esports Foundation also commits to offering visa and accommodation assistance to LCQ winners to facilitate their participation.
The Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers will initially be available for titles including Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, and Street Fighter 6, with additional games to be announced in the future. Through this expanded qualification framework, the Esports World Cup seeks to broaden player engagement and strengthen local esports ecosystems worldwide as they progress toward the 2027 championship.
