Essex secured a six-wicket victory over Leicestershire in the final day of their County Championship Division One match at Leicester on Tuesday. The win earned Essex 23 points, compared to Leicestershire’s three.

Leicestershire batted first and were dismissed for 187 runs, with N F Kelly top-scoring with 78. Essex responded strongly in their first innings, posting 401 runs. J M Cox led the charge with a commanding 204, supported by M J J Critchley’s 97. Leicestershire’s R Ahmed was the most successful bowler, claiming four wickets for 102 runs.

Following on after conceding a 214-run deficit, Leicestershire reached 326-7 overnight but were eventually bowled out for 428 in their second innings. L J Hill anchored the innings with a resilient 127. Other notable contributions included J H Davey’s 21 and T A R Scriven’s 10. Critchley made further inroads by taking two wickets, while Harmer and Snater each took three.

Chasing a target of 215 for victory in their second innings, Essex lost four wickets for 205 runs but managed to reach the target with 45.5 overs remaining. P I Walter emerged as the top scorer with 110 runs, while C W J Allison added 36. M J J Critchley chipped in with an unbeaten 28 to guide Essex home. Among Leicestershire’s bowlers, Evison and Scriven each took a wicket, while Green and Davey also contributed with one dismissal apiece.

Essex’s bowling attack was led by Critchley, Harmer, and Snater, who took multiple wickets across both innings. Harmer’s return of 3 for 124 off 51 overs played a crucial role in curbing the opposition’s second innings total.

The victory strengthens Essex’s position in Division One as they continue their campaign, while Leicestershire remain at the bottom of the table with just three points from this fixture.
