The Essex Senior League season commenced on Friday night, starting a week later than the previous year, with a series of competitive fixtures across the division.
Founder members Heybridge Swifts, returning after 42 years playing at Steps 2, 3, and 4, hosted West Essex at Wadham Lodge. The match ended in a goalless draw before a sizeable crowd. Heybridge’s Milo Grimes was dismissed midway through the second half, but goalkeeper Callum Chafer kept his side in contention by saving a late penalty and its subsequent retake by West Essex.
The opening goal of the season was recorded early in Barking’s 4-2 win over Sporting Bengal United. Michael Dixon’s early strike launched the home side’s attack, eventually leading to a hat-trick for the forward. Alfie Attrill added Barking’s fourth goal, while Harry Baker and Frederick Agyeman scored for Sporting Bengal.
Woodford Town featured prominently in the scoring charts, delivering a dominant 6-0 victory at Saffron Walden Town. Jibran Ahmed led the charge with a hat-trick, supported by a brace from Jaedon Phillips.
Other successful away sides included Ilford, who secured a 2-0 win at Hullbridge Sports with goals from Shaike Kamara and Patrik Ohakwe. Frenford also won 2-0 on the road at Burroughs Park against Great Wakering Rovers, courtesy of strikes from Yousuf Zulqurnain Hoque and Christian Gyamfi.
SOUL Tower Hamlets recorded a victory against newcomers Clapton Community, with Anderson Baro scoring the decisive goal in front of a strong Spotted Dog crowd. Harwich & Parkeston edged past Hutton thanks to a lone goal from Louis Bloom, handing the debutants a disappointing start.
White Ensign took an early lead at Hackney Wick through Yemi Adelani, but the home team responded with goals from Peter Oyetunji and Roberto Carvalho to complete the turnaround. Romford secured a narrow 2-1 win at Basildon United, with Alfie Leach scoring a late winner after Lochlain Murray equalised Jaxon Brown’s opener.
In a closely contested match, Benfleet clinched all three points against Halstead Town with a late goal from Cameron Harris.
The early results indicate a competitive season ahead as clubs aim to establish themselves in the Essex Senior League.
