Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has affirmed that winger Estevao Willian remains content at the club and is expected to play a significant role this season, despite recent reports suggesting a possible departure in the January transfer window due to limited playing time. Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Leeds United, Alonso emphasized that Estevao is fully engaged in training and match preparations.
“No, Este is ready. He’s training well. The other day against Arsenal, he had a very good impact and a great chance,” Alonso said. “He’s fully involved with a very good attitude every day.” The coach highlighted the importance of players demonstrating hunger and determination throughout the long campaign, naming Estevao as a part of that group.
Alonso also addressed the status of Valentin Barco, the Argentina international who joined Chelsea from Strasbourg over the summer. Barco has seen limited minutes so far but is expected to start in the upcoming cup fixture. Alonso expressed confidence in Barco’s adaptation to English football and expects him to gain more playing opportunities as the season progresses.
“It’s still early days for everything,” Alonso said. “He’s patient and intelligent, aware that moving from Strasbourg to here is a significant step. The competition is strong, but he’s ready for the challenge.”
Chelsea’s squad faces several absences ahead of the match. Midfielder Moises Caicedo remains sidelined with a calf injury but could be available for the Premier League game against Hull City on Saturday. Jordan Henderson, Marco Palestra, and Emmanuel Emegha are also out of contention.
Meanwhile, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke expressed optimism about Harry Wilson’s adjustment to the team after limited playing time since joining on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer. Farke praised Wilson’s performances in the Premier League win over Nottingham Forest and acknowledged that adapting to a new club’s style can take time, regardless of a player’s quality.
“We’re all happy to have Harry,” Farke said. “But it’s normal when you have played for so many years at a special club with a distinct way of playing. You can be the best player in the world, but you need a bit of time to adapt to different surroundings.”
