Efforts to reduce school dropout rates linked to language barriers have been a focus of the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs and the Ministry of Education since the 2017-2018 academic year. Together, they have appointed ethnic language teaching assistants and teachers to support educational programmes aimed at promoting instruction in ethnic languages.

During a recent meeting at the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs regional office in Yangon, Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Than Maung addressed ethnic literature teaching assistants and ethnic language teachers from the region. The gathering aimed to identify challenges faced by educators involved in ethnic language programmes and explore potential solutions to enhance the quality and effectiveness of instruction.

The meeting also included representatives from ethnic literature and cultural organizations alongside teaching staff, providing a platform to discuss key issues such as the possibility of permanent appointments for language teachers and recognition of outstanding students through awards during educational ceremonies. These discussions reflected a broader commitment to fostering the development of ethnic language education and improving retention rates among students.

U Than Maung emphasized the importance of open dialogue, encouraging teachers to share the difficulties encountered in their roles. He pledged to work closely with relevant officials to address obstacles and support ongoing efforts to strengthen ethnic language programmes nationwide.
