Etihad Rail, the United Arab Emirates' first national passenger rail service, commenced operations on June 30, 2026, with the launch of the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route. The initial connection runs between Mohamed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, completing the journey in approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. This opening phase reflects a significant development in the UAE’s transport infrastructure, offering a faster alternative to road travel. Prior to the launch, more than 10,000 tickets were sold, underscoring robust public interest in passenger rail services.
Following the debut service, Etihad Rail has outlined a phased rollout for additional stations to expand the network across the UAE. The next stations to open are scheduled for September 30, 2026, linking Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates and Al Dhaid station in Sharjah. This expansion is anticipated to enhance connectivity between key urban centres, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and the eastern coastline, providing commuters with more efficient travel options.
On November 30, 2026, Etihad Rail plans to begin passenger operations at Madinat Zayed and Liwa stations, extending the network into the Al Dhafra region. This timing aligns with the area’s annual events and festival season, aiming to support increased transportation needs during this period.
Further expansion westward into Al Dhafra will continue on December 30, 2026, with the opening of additional stations at Al Sila, Al Dhannah, and Al Mirfa. This phase is expected to enhance mobility for residents in the region while bolstering tourism and economic activities.
The final station included in the current phase of development is Sharjah University City, anticipated to open on March 30, 2027. This addition will strengthen connections across major education, residential, and commercial hubs, completing the first phase of the passenger rail network.
In terms of pricing, Etihad Rail introduced promotional fares to coincide with the service launch. Comfort Class tickets start at AED 55, and Premium Class fares begin at AED 120, representing roughly a 50 percent discount compared to regular rates. Additional discounts apply for specific passenger groups: children aged two to 17 receive a 50 percent reduction, senior citizens aged 60 and above get 20 percent off, and infants under two travel free when accompanied by an adult.
Tickets are available for purchase via the Etihad Rail mobile application or the official website, etihadrail.ae, where travelers can also access schedules and manage bookings. Due to strong demand, passengers are encouraged to book in advance, especially during weekends and holidays.
Etihad Rail is among the UAE’s largest infrastructure undertakings and forms a core component of the country’s strategic vision to develop a sustainable and integrated transport system. The complete passenger network is projected to connect 11 cities across a 900-kilometre railway corridor, enhancing national connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
