Samuel Eto’o, former professional footballer and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), faces multiple allegations related to financial misconduct and ethical violations. The accusations, which include mishandling significant funds and involvement in match-fixing, have sparked controversy within African football and raised questions about potential political protection.
The issues came to light following complaints made to FIFA’s ethics committee over a year ago by former Fecafoot executives, including Guibai Gatama and Henry Njalla Quan Junior. Gatama alleges that payments totaling more than €500,000, made by the Russian Football Federation as a match fee for a friendly between Russia and Cameroon in October 2023, were transferred into Eto’o’s personal bank account in Qatar but never appeared in Fecafoot’s official records. Eto’o and Fecafoot have not denied the transactions, but the whereabouts of the funds remain unclear. Gatama has expressed frustration with the lack of response from FIFA, interpreting the silence as institutional protection for Eto’o. He cited Eto’o’s publicly visible close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and ongoing support from FIFA, notably through the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, as factors contributing to this perception.
Henry Njalla Quan Junior has also raised concerns, alleging Eto’o’s involvement in match-fixing and abuse of power. He claimed to have been threatened after making his allegations and questioned the implications of Eto’o’s strong political alignment with Infantino, suggesting potential reciprocities benefiting Eto’o. Eto’o has denied wrongdoing in connection with accusations of influencing referees or manipulating match outcomes, describing conversations with club officials as attempts to encourage investment rather than illicit activity.
Eto’o’s relationship with Infantino has been publicly described in warm terms by Eto’o himself. In a recent interview, he called Infantino a “brother” and praised his leadership for benefiting African football. Eto’o has been a vocal supporter of Infantino’s initiatives, including the FFE project designed to boost African football’s standing by attracting private investments, a plan cited in FIFA’s recent legal filings.
Despite his influential status, Eto’o’s career has been marked by legal and disciplinary challenges. In 2022, he received a suspended prison sentence and a substantial fine for tax fraud related to his image rights during his playing days in Spain, though this did not affect his presidency of Fecafoot. In 2024, he was banned by FIFA from attending national team matches due to abusive conduct toward match officials. Additionally, a disciplinary panel initially fined him for ethics breaches related to betting and match manipulation allegations, but the fine was overturned on procedural grounds, and evidence was deemed insufficient to prove guilt.
Critics argue that Eto’o’s political connections, including ties to President Paul Biya’s family and influential Cameroonian politicians, provide him with protection, discouraging dissent. Meanwhile, FIFA maintains that its ethics committee operates independently of the president and that investigations are confidential and handled on a case-by-case basis. FIFA also emphasized that scrutiny must be based on substantiated evidence and denied any interference by Infantino in ethics processes.
Eto’o and Fecafoot have not commented publicly on the specific allegations. The ongoing investigation, combined with Eto’o’s high-profile role within African football and association with FIFA leadership, continues to draw attention to governance and transparency issues in the sport’s administration on the continent.
