The European Union is aiming to bolster its partnership with Qatar in several key areas including security and defence, trade, energy, and cultural exchanges, while seeking to enhance cooperation on promoting peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf region. These priorities were outlined by European Union Ambassador to Qatar Antonino Maggiore during a meeting with media representatives in Doha on October 26.

Maggiore emphasized the EU’s intent to deepen bilateral relations, building on recent high-level political engagements that have created positive momentum between the two parties. He identified security and defence collaboration, economic and trade ties, energy cooperation, and people-to-people contacts as focal points for future development. The ambassador also highlighted the potential introduction of a visa waiver for Qatari citizens as a significant step toward facilitating closer exchanges.

Central to the discussions was the importance of regional stability and peace. Maggiore noted strong alignment between the EU and Qatar on several major regional issues, including the conflicts and political dynamics involving Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen. He underscored that these shared positions offer a solid foundation for increased diplomatic coordination and collective efforts to find peaceful and sustainable resolutions.

The ambassador described the EU as possessing significant political influence, diplomatic expertise, and economic resources to contribute meaningfully to resolving regional tensions. He referenced the Union’s experience in peacebuilding and its commitment to upholding international law and a rules-based global order. This, he said, positions the EU to work alongside Qatar and other regional partners to advance diplomatic solutions and support economic partnerships that promote shared prosperity.

Maggiore also pointed to the complementary strengths of the partnership, highlighting Qatar’s established role in mediation and diplomacy, which could be reinforced by the EU’s capacity to mobilize political, economic, and defence instruments for regional stability and conflict resolution.

The event underscored the importance of sustained communication between the EU Delegation and local media to convey the Union’s priorities and perspectives effectively. Maggiore expressed appreciation for the journalists’ engagement, affirming the EU’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and close relationship with Qatar-based media as part of its broader public diplomacy strategy.

This media engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the EU Delegation to raise awareness of the Union’s role on the global stage and to strengthen its profile within Qatar. Maggiore reiterated that the EU remains dedicated to reinforcing its presence and enhancing cooperation with Qatar toward advancing peace, stability, international collaboration, and economic growth in the region.
