Sunderland defender Kevin Danso has expressed confidence in the club’s ambitions as they prepare to face Torreense in the Europa League on Thursday night. The 24-year-old Austrian, currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, brings valuable experience to the squad after participating as a substitute in Tottenham’s 2025 Europa League final victory over Manchester United.
Danso, who has previously lifted European silverware, said the team is aiming for success and is aware of the challenges ahead. “That would be amazing. I mean, that’s the goal. You go into every competition trying to win it. We know it’s tough — I know it’s tough — but we’re going to try to go on a good run as much as possible,” he said.
Sunderland last won a major trophy in 1973, when they won the FA Cup as a Second Division team in a notable upset against Leeds United. Danso believes the club’s current European campaign offers an opportunity to deliver something special for their devoted supporters. “It’s something I feel like Sunderland supporters definitely do deserve. They’re behind us every day. It’s about giving them good performances and getting results,” he added.
The Black Cats will look to continue their Europa League journey with an away match against Polish side Lech Poznan next week. Manager Regis Le Bris emphasized the significance of the current European competition for the club’s growth. “We earned the right to be in this situation. It’s demanding but a really good experience for this club,” Le Bris said.
Defender Luke O’Nien, who joined Sunderland in 2018 when the club was competing in League One, is set to make his first European appearances. He described the upcoming matches as a “special” and “incredible moment” for both himself and the club.
Sunderland’s Europa League campaign marks a notable milestone as they seek to rebuild their stature on the European stage, driven by a blend of experienced players like Danso and a loyal fan base eager for success.
