Europe is facing a heightened risk of widespread wildfires in the coming weeks, with Greece, Italy, and parts of central Europe identified as particularly vulnerable. EU officials and fire experts have warned that the combination of successive heatwaves, dry vegetation, and strong winds could trigger numerous simultaneous fires that may overwhelm firefighting resources across the continent.
Maria Zuber, head of the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), cautioned there is a possibility of having "all Europe on fire" if extreme weather conditions persist, placing significant strain on fire suppression efforts. Despite this threat, she expressed confidence that the ERCC could respond to every assistance request, although not all demands might be fully met.
The current fire season has already seen deadly outcomes and large-scale evacuations. On the Greek island of Crete, two firefighters were killed and around 8,000 residents evacuated as fires intensified. Strong winds also fueled blazes on the Cycladic islands of Paros and Andros, disrupting ferry services from Piraeus and complicating aerial firefighting operations.
In southwestern France’s Gironde region, about half of the 220,000 evacuated people have been allowed to return home, but French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that the situation remains complex. Meanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez lifted the national emergency status in areas west of Madrid but urged caution amid ongoing wildfire risks.
Scientific assessments link the recent extreme weather that has driven many of the wildfires to human-induced climate change. Studies suggest these conditions were at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain due to climate change. Fire science experts note that Europe is still in the peak of its wildfire season, which typically extends into September or even later in southern parts of the continent.
There is concern that the high demand for firefighting assets—including crucial aerial support like water-bombing planes—could leave fewer resources available for mutual aid between countries. This potential "overload" threatens Europe’s ability to effectively manage large blazes across multiple nations simultaneously.
The EU has made efforts to improve firefighting capacity, including ordering a fleet of 12 Canadair water bombers; however, deliveries are expected only by 2028. This year’s fire season highlights the limitations of current adaptation strategies, even in countries with significant investments in wildfire management.
Experts emphasize the growing vulnerability of European cities and towns, where a higher proportion of land borders combustible vegetation compared to the global average. Climate models project that temperate and boreal forests across Europe—stretching from France and Germany to Poland and Scandinavia—will face increased fire danger due to warmer, longer growing seasons producing more vegetation alongside hotter, drier weather.
Lessons from wildfire-prone regions like Australia, California, and Finland suggest that prevention efforts—such as controlled burns, forest diversification, and landscape fragmentation—along with improved early warning systems and technological innovations like thermal satellites and drones, could enhance preparedness. Greece has pioneered the use of thermal satellite constellations to detect hotspots rapidly.
At the local level, encouraging residents and businesses in fire-prone areas to maintain fire-resistant measures and preparedness is also considered vital. Still, experts acknowledge the challenge facing authorities, especially when resources are stretched thin, as Europe continues to confront the increasing frequency and severity of wildfire threats amid a warming climate.
