The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has reopened certain Syrian air corridors following comprehensive assessments that indicate improved safety conditions for overflights at higher altitudes. This development marks a shift toward increased international use of Syrian airspace, which had faced restrictions due to security concerns.
Omar Hosari, president of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport in Syria, announced the update on social media, highlighting that the decision follows a meeting involving his authority, the EU mission, and heads of European missions in Syria. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and restoring air connectivity between Syria and Europe.
Hosari noted that two Asian airlines are preparing to commence operations utilizing Syrian airspace by the end of October, signaling a rise in overflight traffic and growing international confidence in the country's air navigation safety. He emphasized ongoing technical efforts and international coordination aimed at addressing residual restrictions with the ultimate goal of reinstating Syria’s full integration into the global air traffic network.
In a key step last month, Syrian aviation authorities officially adopted new air route L602 after months of technical evaluations, aircraft traffic simulations, and consultations with neighboring countries and pertinent organizations. This initiative forms part of a broader project to modernize Syria’s air route infrastructure and enhance airspace management efficiency.
Additionally, Hosari engaged with leaders of European Union missions in Syria last Wednesday to further discuss strategies for strengthening civil aviation and air transport collaboration between Syria and European stakeholders.
At an event held during the meeting, Syrian Aviation Holding marked the launch of its first aircraft bearing a new visual identity. CEO Anwar Akkad outlined that the rebranding is part of extensive digital modernization efforts, including upgrades to booking and payment systems, the introduction of a mobile application, and automation of internal management. He also announced that a new global-standard reservation system is scheduled to become operational early next month.
