Norway is preparing to host a gathering of European royals for the funeral of King Harald V, who passed away last week at the age of 89. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Oslo on September 9.

Among the attendees will be members of Sweden’s royal family, including King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, as well as Princess Madeleine and her husband Christopher O’Neill. The ties between the Norwegian and Swedish royal families run deep, with King Harald’s mother being Swedish Princess Märtha. Harald also served as godfather to Crown Princess Victoria, who referred to him affectionately as “Uncle Harald.”

Denmark’s King Frederik X and Queen Mary have confirmed their attendance, reflecting the close, though more distant, familial connections between the Danish and Norwegian royal lines. The Netherlands will be represented by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, former Queen Princess Beatrix, and Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia.

Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are also expected to be present, alongside Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, according to Norwegian media reports.

The gathering of such a distinguished group underscores King Harald’s longstanding role in European royal networks and the respect he commanded internationally. The funeral will mark the end of an era for Norway as the nation bids farewell to a monarch who reigned since 1991.
