Sam Ryder, the British singer-songwriter best known for his runner-up finish at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, is bringing his vocal talents to the stage in the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s *Jesus Christ Superstar*. The production, directed by Timothy Sheader, opened at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London, where it runs through September 5.
Ryder stars as Jesus in this latest iteration of the rock opera, which revisits the biblical story with a contemporary and stylized approach. Sheader’s production initially debuted in 2016 as a stripped-back, minimalist retelling, celebrated for breaking away from some of the dated theatrical conventions often associated with Lloyd Webber’s work. The musical centers on Jesus’s confrontations with Roman authorities and his eventual downfall, presenting the story with a fresh perspective that blends reverence with modern sensibilities.
The current staging sees significant design enhancements by Tom Scutt, featuring elaborate costumes and a more ornate set that contrasts with the earlier production's simplicity. The Roman characters, for example, are now dressed in intricate kimonos rather than leather outfits, while the choreography has shifted from tightly structured sequences to a freer, more chaotic movement style. Audience members holding standing tickets occupy scaffolding cages at the back of the stage, adding an unconventional visual layer to the performance.
Despite the production’s visual complexity, the strength of the principal cast stands out. Ryder’s rendition of “Gethsemane,” the musical’s pivotal second-act solo, draws particular attention. Beginning with a gentle acoustic guitar accompaniment, he transitions into a powerful falsetto, conveying Jesus’s emotional turmoil and reflections on mortality. Ryder’s vocal performance has been widely noted as a highlight, though some critics point to his limited acting experience in fully capturing the character’s internal conflicts.
Tyrone Huntley portrays Judas with a raw and intense energy, depicting the character as a tormented figure challenging Jesus’s spiritual authority. Desmonda Cathabel delivers a nuanced Mary Magdalene, combining a glamorous presence with a voice described as both sweet and fluid. David Thaxton takes on the role of Pontius Pilate, offering a dark and brooding interpretation, while Jesse Tyler Ferguson makes a camp cameo appearance as Herod.
Since its original premiere, *Jesus Christ Superstar* has drawn both acclaim and controversy for its unconventional portrayal of biblical characters, notably presenting Judas as a more complex and conflicted figure than traditionally depicted. The musical explores themes of religious fervor, ideology, and the fraught dynamics within a movement facing collapse.
This revival maintains the production’s reputation for blending theatrical innovation with the enduring power of Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s score. The show continues to attract audiences interested in its bold storytelling and compelling musical performances through early September in London.
