Everton manager David Moyes faces a series of important decisions as the club approaches the start of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace on August 22. With player transfers expected before the campaign begins, Moyes must also determine how best to utilise his current squad amid several position uncertainties.
One pressing issue is the right-back role. Jake O’Brien, traditionally a centre-back, has been filling in at right-back during pre-season, a situation neither he nor the club anticipated this far into preparations. The departure of Seamus Coleman and the potential exit of Nathan Patterson have left Everton on the brink of having no senior right-back. The club has reportedly made enquiries about Celtic’s Alistair Johnston as a possible solution. Addressing this position promptly would allow Moyes to return O’Brien to his preferred central defensive role.
At left-back, Adam Aznou has impressed in attacking phases during pre-season fixtures, demonstrating promising offensive skills. However, his defensive abilities remain less tested. Moyes’s assessment is ongoing, but with uncertainty around wide attacking positions, Aznou could be deployed further forward on the left wing, where he made a notable impact during his limited competitive appearances, including a substitute outing against Sunderland in the FA Cup.
In midfield, the possibility of Carlos Alcaraz securing the coveted No.10 role appears limited due to significant competition for places. Although Alcaraz has exhibited the capacity to influence matches when introduced from the bench, the abundance of midfield options and his current contract situation mean that Everton might entertain offers for the Spanish player.
Another key consideration is the future of 19-year-old midfielder Harrison Armstrong. After two strong loan spells in the Championship and sparing appearances for Everton’s senior team, Armstrong’s development remains a priority. The arrival of newcomer Hayden Hackney adds complexity to squad selection, making this summer critical in determining whether Armstrong will be integrated into the first team or continue gaining experience elsewhere.
On the right flank, Moyes must also evaluate the options between Merlin Rohl and Tyler Dibling. While Rohl has shown promise during pre-season, the position may not suit him ideally. Dibling, seen as a highly talented but underutilized player within the squad, could offer a better alternative if given sufficient game time to regain confidence and demonstrate his abilities.
With the season’s start imminent, Moyes’s decisions on these matters will be crucial in shaping Everton’s campaign and addressing the squad’s tactical and personnel needs.
