Benjamin Payne's rapid ascent in the artificial intelligence sector marks a notable transition from manual labor to the forefront of technological innovation. Originally an Australian coal miner, Payne has emerged as a prominent figure in AI, recently earning a place on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the field.

Now based in London, Payne remains Australian according to corporate filings for his company, Nscale, and its affiliated entities. Nscale has experienced significant growth partly due to its strategic partnership with Nvidia, the US-based tech giant led by billionaire Jensen Huang. In September 2025, a video surfaced showing Huang presenting Payne with a signed bottle of Johnnie Walker scotch following the signing of a contract between the two companies. Huang remarked on the remarkable trajectory of Payne’s startup, suggesting it had the potential to reach a $50 billion valuation within 18 months. Payne credited Huang’s support for the startup’s success.

Payne’s career path is unconventional for a tech entrepreneur. Prior to entering the AI and data center industries, he worked for several years in physically demanding roles. He spent three years underground at the Ravensworth coal mine in the Hunter Valley, followed by various construction and tunneling jobs. In 2016, he moved to Sydney and took a position as a “dogman” at the Barangaroo Crown site, a role responsible for directing crane operations.

By 2017, Payne co-founded a labor-hire company servicing the mining sector. He progressed to managing director of Sydney-based PT Capital in 2019, which advised clients on renewable energy projects. The following year, Payne and business partner Nathan Townsend established Arkon Mining, later renamed Arkon Energy. This venture operated as a data center startup that utilized renewable electricity to mine bitcoin, serving as a foundation for what later evolved into Nscale.

Arkon Energy pursued acquisitions of data centers in locations including the Arctic Circle and Ohio. Payne’s business activities also included a brief involvement in the special purpose acquisition company Battery Future Acquisition Corp, which targeted battery mineral supply chains, though Arkon remained the primary focus.

Payne has expressed confidence in AI becoming dominant in global business over the next five years and has positioned Nscale to be a leading player within this rapidly evolving sector. His trajectory from manual labor to AI entrepreneur underscores the shifting opportunities within today’s technology landscape.
