As intense fighting continues in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, the cities of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk along with nearby towns remain critical strongholds amid President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing campaign to capture the area. Since launching the invasion in 2022, Russia has repeatedly sought to seize full control of Donetsk, but despite costly offensives, Russian forces have made only limited gains.
Known collectively as the "fortress belt," these urban centers lie at the heart of Ukraine’s defensive line and are vital for the country’s overall security. Russian military efforts have included repeated frontal assaults and sustained aerial bombardments, targeting this region in attempts to achieve a strategic breakthrough. However, Ukrainian defenders have maintained control despite considerable pressure.
Over the summer, observers noted the evolving intensity of the conflict along the 13-mile corridor between Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. In July, Russian forces were reportedly conducting reconnaissance operations a few miles east of the main road. By August, Ukrainian forces had established extensive defensive measures, including entrenchments and coils of razor wire, reinforcing the frontline against persistent Russian probing.
Following the escalation, both cities were declared war zones by late August, leading to significant civilian evacuation. Many residential structures and civilian infrastructure suffered severe damage or destruction amid constant shelling and drone strikes. The daily rhythm of conflict has been marked by the sounds of Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire responding to rocket, artillery, and glide bomb attacks, with intervals of relative quiet growing shorter over time.
Ukraine’s defense also involves unconventional personnel, including former convicts integrated into the armed forces to address manpower shortages. Beginning in 2024, the 10th Brigade began enlisting prisoners with non-violent backgrounds, offering pardons in exchange for military service. These individuals have taken on vital leadership roles, such as sergeant positions within the “Shkval” (Squall) battalion—units composed entirely of ex-convicts—which have become an increasingly important component of Ukraine’s frontline resilience.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian police officers also play a part in maintaining defense lines within these contested areas, illustrating the diverse makeup of Ukraine’s forces in the region. Despite ongoing Russian attempts and mounting casualties on both sides, the fortress belt around Slovyansk and Kramatorsk remains a key obstacle to Moscow’s aspirations in Donetsk, underscoring the protracted and brutal nature of the conflict.
