Gerard Hutchings, a former Hampshire Police inspector, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for sexually abusing young men while they were in custody. The 67-year-old was convicted on 11 charges, including five counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent.

The offenses, which occurred between 1999 and 2007, involved 18 male victims aged between 17 and 31. Some victims were subjected to sexual assaults during unwarranted strip searches carried out by Hutchings.

At Bristol Crown Court, Judge William Hurt described Hutchings's actions as “a course of abusive conduct,” emphasizing the sustained nature of the misconduct. Hutchings, who resides in Ashurst, Hampshire, abused the trust placed in him as a police officer to exploit vulnerable individuals in his custody.

The case highlights serious breaches of professional standards and misconduct within law enforcement, prompting calls for strict oversight to prevent similar abuses in the future.
