The trial of Alex Kwong Kong-chi, 31, his brother Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, 35, and their father Kwong Kau, 68, in connection with the murder of socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung has shed new light on the family tensions preceding the killing. Testimony revealed that Kwong Kau, the former father-in-law of Choi, expressed deep resentment toward her, reportedly calling her a "birthing machine" during a heated confrontation.
Chris Tam Fong-chun, Choi’s partner, testified in Hong Kong’s High Court on Wednesday, recounting the deterioration of relations between Choi and her former in-laws in mid-2022. Tam described an intense argument that erupted between Choi and his family, which he identified as a pivotal moment before the eventual breakdown of the relationship. According to Tam, the dispute centered around Choi’s elder daughter falling ill, and disagreements over the treatment and care of the children. The exchange escalated when Kwong Kau allegedly physically lunged at Choi and verbally attacked her.
Choi, a social media influencer, was previously married to Alex Kwong, who, together with his brother and father, is charged with her murder. Prosecutors contend the trio orchestrated the attack in February 2023, motivated in part by a dispute over a luxury apartment in the Kadooria residential complex in Ho Man Tin. The flat, valued at HK$72 million and registered in the name of Kwong Kau, is alleged to have been purchased with money provided by Choi, with the registration aimed at avoiding HK$9 million in double stamp duty taxes.
Tam also testified about the complex family dynamics and property arrangements. He said Choi had portrayed the Kwong family as financially stable to outsiders, including himself, to avoid criticism of her two children from her first marriage living conditions. Initially, Tam was unaware that the Ho Man Tin flat was legally owned by Kwong Kau, but later learned from Choi that the property was purchased with her funds despite being under Kwong Kau’s name.
Further details emerged about the relationship timeline between Tam and Choi. The couple began dating in late 2015 and held a wedding banquet a year later without formal registration. They had two children together, and Choi lived with Tam’s family at a residence on Begonia Road in Kowloon Tong, where they received significant financial support from Tam’s father. Choi’s children from her previous marriage initially stayed in a separate flat in Hung Hom but were later moved closer to her home in Kowloon Tong.
Kwong Kau, a retired police sergeant, has denied preventing the burial of Choi’s body, a charge his sons have admitted to. The defense has not yet presented its case. The trial continues as the court examines the complex personal and financial disputes underlying the tragic killing of Abby Choi.
