A Dhaka court has officially recorded the arrest of former Rajshahi-4 lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad in connection with an attempted murder case stemming from an incident during the July 2024 Mass Uprising. The development took place on Monday when police presented Azad before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque and requested that he be shown as arrested in the case. Following the court’s order, Azad was returned to jail.

The case concerns an attack on a rally held by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the Jatrabari area of the capital. According to case documents, on August 5, 2024, Alek Khan, who was participating in the demonstration, was shot during the assault. The case has since been under investigation, leading to Azad's arrest in connection with the alleged attempted murder.

No further details have been disclosed regarding the circumstances of the attack or Azad’s involvement. Authorities have not commented extensively on the case beyond confirming his detention and the court’s ruling.
