HANOVER, Md. — Former President Joe Biden rallied Maryland Democrats on Saturday night, marking the two-year anniversary of the debate performance that precipitated the end of his 2024 reelection bid. Speaking at a fundraising gala held at a Maryland casino concert venue, Biden sharply criticized President Donald Trump, accusing him of corruption and repeatedly assailing his tenure in office.
Addressing the boxing-themed “Fight Back & Win” event organized by the Maryland Democratic Party, Biden highlighted what he described as troubling financial conflicts tied to Trump’s presidency. “It’s simply stunning to me. He has no shame. And, frankly, it’s embarrassing for the country,” Biden said, referring to Trump’s growing personal fortune during his time in office. His remarks were briefly interrupted by a pro-Palestinian protester, who was quickly removed by security after being drowned out by boos from the crowd.
Inside the venue, Biden received warm applause and support from attendees, including local Democratic officials. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott praised Biden as “my favorite president” and cited federal initiatives from his administration that benefited the city, while Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller shared a personal anecdote about a birthday call from Biden. Maryland Governor Wes Moore defended Biden’s controversial decision to remain in the 2024 race after the debate setback, framing it as a sacrifice made in service of the country.
The event raised approximately $250,000 for the Maryland Democratic Party, the largest amount since Moore took office in 2023. This followed a previous appearance by Biden at a South Dakota fundraising event, where he raised over $275,000. While the timing of the Maryland gala—coinciding with the two-year anniversary of the debate—was criticized by a former Biden campaign official as an “own goal,” party chair Steuart Pittman expressed optimism about the former president’s enduring appeal. Pittman acknowledged initial skepticism over inviting Biden but said the audience reaction proved the decision justified. “Over time, people will be so nostalgic about Joe Biden,” he said.
Throughout the roughly 10-minute address, Biden focused on the “dark days” under Trump’s administration, urging Democrats to remain engaged and resilient. Without referencing his health struggles, Biden invoked personal lessons from his father, emphasizing perseverance. “To all of you who love this country, it’s time to get up, damn it. Get up. Get up now. Continue this fight,” he said.
The event also underscored ongoing debates within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s 2024 bid. Some party figures, including Hillary Clinton, have suggested Biden’s decision to run again instead of ceding the field to younger candidates contributed to Trump’s return to the White House. Clinton described it as “a terrible mistake” that hurt both Biden’s legacy and the country. Nonetheless, in Maryland—one of the most reliably Democratic states with a significant Black electorate—Biden continues to enjoy strong support, reflecting his longstanding ties to key constituencies within the party.
Biden concluded his speech with a call for Democrats to work toward a fairer and more decent America, expressing affection for his audience before departing the stage.
