John Scott, a veteran journalist who spent much of his career covering the West Midlands, has died at the age of 76. Scott joined The Sun as the West Midlands correspondent in 1980 and reported for the publication until 2005. Throughout his tenure, he covered significant regional events, including the Fred West serial killer case, the M1 plane crash, and the murder trial of Tracie Andrews.
Prior to his time at The Sun, Scott began his journalism career at the Birmingham Evening Mail. After leaving The Sun, he continued working in the Midlands, ultimately retiring from the Wolverhampton Express and Star at the age of 70.
Former Sun news editor Jamie Pyatt remembered Scott as a dedicated journalist who was always available regardless of the hour. Pyatt highlighted Scott’s ability to cultivate relationships with sources and individuals connected to his stories, which enabled him to return for follow-up reporting when needed. “A great reporter for The Sun. He’ll be missed,” Pyatt said.
John Scott is survived by his wife, sons, and grandsons.
