A former Conservative councillor from Swindon, Philip Young, has admitted to repeatedly drugging and sexually abusing his wife over a period of more than a decade, according to court proceedings at Winchester Crown Court. Young, who served as a cabinet member on Swindon Borough Council, pleaded guilty earlier this year to nearly 50 sexual offences involving his wife, Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity.
During the trial, prosecutors detailed that Young not only abused his wife himself but also advertised her without her knowledge on dating and swinging websites, seeking men to visit their home to assault her. The advertisements were reportedly placed on platforms including Craigslist, Grindr, and various swinging sites, with a specified preference for men living near Swindon to ensure rapid access. Joanne Young, a mother of three, was drugged with sedatives by her husband to render her unconscious and unable to recall the assaults.
Four men—Norman Macksoni, 48; Richard Wilkins, 62; Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32; and Mohammed Hassan, 38—have denied charges related to incidents occurring between 2016 and 2023. They stand trial accused of sexual offences involving Joanne Young while she was blindfolded, restrained, and unconscious. Authorities and prosecutors described video evidence showing Ms. Young bound and blindfolded during sexual activity at her home, with Young reportedly observing and encouraging the assaults.
The prosecution emphasized that Mrs. Young was unaware of the extent of the abuse, believing until recently that she was in a conventional monogamous marriage. One incident cited during the trial involved her waking with restraints and feeling an unfamiliar presence near her, indicating multiple attackers. Police investigations uncovered that Young had been administering sedatives surreptitiously, including a packet intercepted in 2015, which he denied knowing about. Toxicology reports confirmed exposure to sedatives between spring 2023 and summer 2024.
While Young has admitted to multiple offences including rape, administering drugs with intent, assault by penetration, sexual assaults, voyeurism, and publishing obscene images, the four men currently on trial deny all allegations. The judge has instructed the jury to consider whether the defendants reasonably believed that Mrs. Young consented to any sexual activity, noting that her husband’s guilty pleas do not automatically implicate the others.
The trial, which is expected to last approximately four weeks, continues as jurors weigh the evidence surrounding the accused men’s involvement in the ongoing abuse at the Young family home. A sixth defendant, Dean Hamilton of Somerset, who faces similar charges, has admitted to rape and sexual assault and, along with Young, awaits sentencing following the trial’s conclusion.
