French authorities have launched a murder investigation following the death of John Agner, an 85-year-old British expatriate found bludgeoned to death outside his home in the rural village of Verlus, located about an hour north of Pau in southwestern France. Agner’s body was discovered on Saturday morning after police identified his car being driven at high speed by a group of four men.

Police initiated the investigation after officers spotted a Kia Ceed driving erratically through the town of Mont-de-Marsan, approximately 25 miles from Verlus. The vehicle was pursued for 20 minutes at speeds reaching up to 75 mph before the occupants abandoned it around 2 a.m., fleeing on foot. Authorities apprehended one 60-year-old suspect, who is reportedly known to police, while three others remain at large.

Investigators believe Agner was attacked late on Friday, suffering severe head injuries from violent blows. The body was located in the front garden of his isolated residence, which he had occupied for around 20 years. Agner lived alone since his wife, Susan, was hospitalized in July. Neighbors described the property as remote, with the nearest house situated about 200 yards away.

Local residents expressed shock at the violent incident, which is unprecedented in the tranquil hamlet. Mayor Jean Menvielle commented on the rarity of such crimes in the area, noting that no burglary or serious criminal activity had previously occurred. Authorities are exploring how the suspects reached the isolated location, considering whether they may have followed Agner from the hospital where his wife was receiving treatment.

Neighbors recounted that while Agner lived modestly, he sometimes boasted about having considerable wealth. He supplemented his income by hosting occasional paying guests, often cyclists or hikers passing through the region. One neighbor remarked on the potential risk of inviting strangers into the home, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Despite the violent nature of the assault, police found no evidence of a struggle inside the house, and the door was left open. Nothing of apparent value, aside from the car, was taken during the incident, puzzling investigators.

Agner had previously resided in various locations, including Northumberland, Southampton, the Orkney Islands, and Vancouver, Canada. He was described as fit and active for his age and known for his love of cycling. He regularly visited his wife in the hospital. The couple had one daughter.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects and probe potential motives behind the attack.
