Electrolyte drinks, which have surged in popularity as a hydration aid, may pose health risks due to their high sodium content, according to experts in kidney and cardiovascular health. These beverages, often perceived as a healthy choice, typically contain significant amounts of sodium — a key factor in raising blood pressure and potentially causing kidney damage over time.

A 500ml serving of electrolyte drink can contain approximately 320mg of sodium, equivalent to about 0.8 grams of salt, more than double the sodium found in a standard packet of ready-salted crisps. Considering that the average daily salt intake in the UK is around 8.4 grams, exceeding the recommended maximum of 6 grams, regular consumption of these drinks could further increase sodium intake. This raises particular concerns for the estimated five million Britons living with undiagnosed chronic kidney disease and the approximately 14 million affected by high blood pressure.

Simon Davies, Emeritus Professor of Nephrology at Keele University and trustee of Kidney Research UK, highlighted the risks associated with excessive sodium from electrolyte drinks: “Consuming a lot of extra sodium every day in a drink can increase blood pressure, which can then damage the kidneys. Damaged kidneys are less efficient at removing excess salt, causing blood pressure to rise further and the kidneys to sustain more damage, creating a harmful cycle. Worryingly, this damage often goes unnoticed until it is well advanced.”

Originally designed to replace fluids and salts lost during intense physical activity or dehydration from illness, electrolyte drinks have transitioned into everyday wellness products marketed to the general public as necessary for optimal hydration and mineral replenishment. Sales and interest have sharply increased, with retailers reporting significant growth in searches and product ranges. Despite the trend, experts caution that for most people, these drinks are unnecessary.

Electrolytes—minerals such as magnesium and potassium that carry an electrical charge—do play a vital role in muscle, heart, and brain function, and can aid in water absorption. However, obtaining them through a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds is considered safer and more beneficial than regular electrolyte supplementation.

Tracy Parker, nutrition lead at the British Heart Foundation, underscored the concern: “The high sodium content in some electrolyte products can raise blood pressure, a leading risk for heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. Much of the salt we consume is already hidden in everyday foods, so adding more through supplements may cause more harm than good.”

Experts agree there are specific scenarios where electrolyte drinks are appropriate, such as during prolonged, strenuous exercise or recovery from conditions involving severe fluid loss. In those cases, replenishing lost salts can prevent symptoms like cramps and dizziness linked to low blood pressure. However, for routine daily hydration, plain water remains sufficient for most individuals.

Professor Davies concluded that there is no scientific justification for daily use of electrolyte drinks among the general public. While moderate consumption may not harm those with healthy kidney function, widespread regular use may unknowingly contribute to cardiovascular and renal health problems.
