Concerns are mounting over the exploitation of British women in Dubai, driven by extensive criminal networks that criminal experts say have expanded in recent years. According to observers, these groups have increasingly operated with apparent impunity since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which prompted a significant influx of expatriates with alleged gang affiliations relocating to the United Arab Emirates.
Experts indicate that these networks commonly use social media platforms to target young women traveling to Dubai, often masking the extent of their operations. Many women are reportedly unaware that they are not dealing solely with an individual contact but rather a broader criminal network. This exploitation has raised alarms due to parallels drawn with the tactics of prominent figures in the “manosphere,” such as Andrew Tate, a controversial influencer known for recruiting women into explicit webcam businesses. Tate currently faces multiple criminal charges across Romania and the UK, including rape, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution for gain, charges he has denied.
Advocates are calling for increased government attention and public warnings regarding the risks faced by British women in Dubai. One campaigner expressed hope that a woman named George, who has been charged in relation to these matters, will be granted bail and afforded due legal process. There is ongoing advocacy to have the charges against George reduced. More broadly, there is a growing demand for official recognition of what some describe as a “wider culture of exploitation” affecting British nationals in the UAE.
The situation remains under scrutiny, with concerns that the full scale of abuse may emerge as a significant national issue if left unaddressed. Authorities and advocacy groups are urging more robust measures to protect vulnerable individuals traveling abroad and to dismantle the criminal networks facilitating these abuses.
