A recent Arctic expedition aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen offered passengers a close-up experience of Greenland’s west coast, its unique wildlife, and the realities of climate change in one of the planet’s most remote regions. The two-week journey, departing from Nuuk with more than 300 passengers and a crew including scientists, combined wildlife observation with community visits and scientific research.
The expedition focused on spotting narwhals—Arctic whales distinguished by their long spiral tusks—migrating during summer into waters around Greenland and Canada. Passengers spent much of their time scanning seas and skies, supported by daily wildlife briefings led by the onboard scientific team. Crossing the Arctic Circle on the second day, the ship aimed to reach near the 80th parallel north, navigating through sea ice as conditions permitted.
Alongside wildlife watching, the expedition provided opportunities for kayaking, hiking, fishing, and participating in fieldwork with researchers. It also included visits to several isolated communities, where locals shared insights into traditional lifestyles still reliant on hunting marine mammals like seals and narwhals. One stop included a communal meal featuring local dishes such as seafood soup, reindeer meatballs, and narwhal prepared in several ways, underscoring the animal’s role as sustenance for Greenland’s Inuit population.
In Disko Bay, passengers witnessed the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rapidly calving glaciers producing towering ice formations. Guides highlighted the increasing glacier activity, attributing it to climate change. Scientific staff engaged guests in collecting water samples to study local ecosystems, while guest chefs emphasized the cultural significance of narwhal hunting, displaying family tusks as symbols of this heritage.
Further north, the ship visited the island town of Uummannaq and small settlements like Savissivik, where residents described challenges posed by the retreating sea ice, which threatens traditional seal hunting practices. Young community members expressed mixed feelings about their future, balancing the prospects offered by ties to Denmark with a desire to preserve their cultural identity.
The expedition reached its northernmost point at 79 degrees latitude, near the Kane Basin between Greenland and Canada, where sea ice limited further progress. During this phase, passengers observed polar bears along the ice edge, including a memorable encounter with a bear swimming close to the vessel. Scientists noted the animal’s healthy condition and natural curiosity.
As the ship turned southward, navigating through dense ice fields described as “ice mélange,” participants reflected on the fragile Arctic environment. While diminishing sea ice may facilitate future navigation, the environmental changes pose serious risks to local communities dependent on the ice for their livelihood.
The journey combined education, scientific engagement, and cultural exchange to provide a comprehensive perspective on the Arctic’s ecological and human landscape amid a warming climate.
