The incident occurred on Tuesday night and has led to a broad counterterrorism inquiry as officials assess the potential implications.
Forensic analysis revealed that the drone was equipped with high-grade military explosives and a detonator, indicating a level of sophistication that marks a departure from prior incidents involving unmanned aerial vehicles in the region. According to German federal prosecutors, the drone posed a serious threat to transportation and logistics infrastructure, which includes NATO-related operations. The airport serves as a crucial center for military and commercial freight, including the Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS) program that uses Antonov An-124 aircraft to transport heavy equipment to Ukraine.
Initial media reports suggested that one of the Ukrainian planes parked near the drone was loaded with military ammunition, raising speculation about the drone’s intended target and the motivations behind the attack. However, a senior German politician later contested these claims, stating that the Ukrainian aircraft in the vicinity were not carrying military materials at the time, highlighting ongoing uncertainty about specific details.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the drone incident as a hybrid attack that elevates the level of danger faced by the country’s critical infrastructure. Members of the German parliament, including Roderich Kiesewetter, who sits on the intelligence committee, have suggested Russian involvement, reflecting the ongoing tensions connected to the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
