Lovestruck, a café and bookstore located at 44 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, Cambridge, has recently undergone renovations just a year and a half after opening. Owner Rachel Kanter explained that the redesign was driven by the need to better accommodate a variety of customer activities, including individual café visits, group events, and author talks held in a dedicated back area of the shop.

The refurbishment included reducing the size of the ordering counter to create additional seating upfront, expanding the menu, and introducing a selection of cocktails. Kanter emphasized that increasing the community space was a top priority to facilitate gatherings and events.

The revamped menu features items such as the Salmon BLT, served on ciabatta bread from Seven Stars Bakery, which combines smoky salmon, bacon, arugula, roasted tomatoes, and aioli. Other offerings include avocado on sourdough toast, available plain or topped with an egg, and customizable bagel egg sandwiches. To complement these dishes, patrons can choose from cheese plates and charcuterie boards accompanied by olives, fig jam, and crackers.

Lovestruck’s coffee program was developed under the guidance of Boston coffee expert George Howell, who trained the baristas to deliver quality beverages with well-crafted latte art. Tea is sourced from MEM, an importer based in Davis Square, with staff skilled in proper preparation. The wine selection is intentionally limited to a small assortment—one sparkling wine, one rosé, one orange, two reds, and two whites—reflecting the venue’s identity as a bookshop café rather than a full-scale wine bar.

The cocktail offerings are described as low-proof “cordials,” adhering to licensing restrictions, allowing patrons to enjoy drinks without strong intoxication. This approach encourages a relaxed atmosphere where guests can have more than one beverage without feeling overly affected.

Customers have consistently noted the welcoming environment of Lovestruck, with its distinctive red paint and vibrant artificial floral decorations on the front patio ceiling adding to the café’s charm. Though service may be unhurried, staff consistently maintain a polite and friendly demeanor, contributing to a positive customer experience.

Lovestruck continues to be a popular destination for coffee, light meals, and community events in the Harvard Square area.
