Wildfires in southwestern France have prompted widespread evacuations and raised concerns about the future of traditional European summer holidays as extreme heat becomes increasingly prevalent across the region. More than 250,000 people have been displaced due to fires that have engulfed an area more than four times the size of Paris, particularly around Bordeaux. On Tuesday, authorities evacuated 4,000 residents and tourists from the Gironde area, a popular destination west of Bordeaux.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as the country’s most serious fire crisis since World War II. The extent and intensity of the blazes reflect a broader trend of rising temperatures and severe weather conditions affecting major tourist destinations across southern Europe, including Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Experts link the growing threat to long-term climate change rather than temporary weather phenomena. Dr. Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, highlighted that while the anticipated El Niño event later this year will contribute to warmth globally, the fundamental cause of the extreme heat and fire risk is climate change itself. She warned that Europe is likely to experience temperatures reaching 50°C in the near future, underscoring the escalating risks for popular summer holiday spots.

The impact on tourism is already becoming evident. A May survey by InsureandGo found that 75 percent of UK travelers believe traditional southern European destinations may be too hot for visits by 2030. This shift in perception has prompted travel agents to promote “coolcation” alternatives in northern European countries such as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. According to data from Trip.com, searches for cooler holiday destinations have surged by 237 percent, while Norway has seen a 28 percent rise in tourism compared with pre-pandemic levels.

University College London experts have underscored the changing nature of holiday travel because of these conditions. Ilan Kelman, a professor specializing in disasters and health at UCL, noted that southern Europe’s summer climate is likely to transform from a sought-after escape to a region that travelers may seek to avoid during the hottest months. Peter Sammonds, a UCL professor of geophysics and climate risks, emphasized that heat above 33°C poses physiological challenges, noting that British tourists often lack awareness of such risks when visiting European destinations compared to more typically hot locations like Egypt or Cyprus.

French officials have advised against travel to affected fire zones until the situation stabilizes. The heatwave and fires come at a time when France had been the second-most popular international destination for British tourists in 2024, with 9.3 million visits recorded by the UK’s Office for National Statistics.

Moving forward, experts suggest that vacationers may need to adjust travel patterns, either by choosing destinations in northern Europe or traveling outside peak heat periods to mitigate risks associated with the changing climate. As extreme weather events increase, the traditional European summer holiday may undergo a significant transformation.
