Prolonged and intense rainfall across Asia has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and substantial damage, leaving dozens dead and many more displaced. The extreme weather events affecting multiple countries in the region have raised concerns about the increasing frequency and severity of such incidents amid changing climate conditions.
In Afghanistan, continuous rainfall lasting 10 days in eastern districts like Dur Baba has severely impacted local communities. Villagers living in stone and mud houses have been particularly vulnerable, with structures collapsing and crops destroyed. At least 31 fatalities and hundreds of missing persons have been reported following flash floods that wiped out entire villages and towns in recent weeks. Local residents reported that such heavy rains are arriving earlier and with greater intensity each year, disrupting transportation networks and agricultural activities.
South Asia has experienced similar challenges. In Bangladesh, the southeastern coastal city of Chattogram recorded a historic 412.3 millimeters of rain within 24 hours in early July, causing devastating flash floods in the Banshkhali district. Residents like Jesmin Akter witnessed their homes collapse and livelihoods wiped out overnight. Akter evacuated her six children through chest-deep water to a relative’s residence but expressed concern about unsanitary conditions that could trigger disease outbreaks.
Neighboring countries including India and Pakistan have also faced erratic and sudden heavy monsoon rains, contributing to regional instability. In East Asia, torrential rain has prompted landslides in Japan and Vietnam, complicating disaster response efforts. China’s ongoing flood season, which began in April, has seen more than 600 rivers exceed warning levels, a significant increase compared to the past five years. In southwestern Chongqing, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall claimed at least 11 lives, while flash floods in Gansu province resulted in 10 fatalities and numerous injuries.
China has also been affected by powerful typhoons this season. Typhoon Noul, the strongest to hit the country this year, led to the evacuation of nearly 900,000 people in Guangdong province. Earlier in July, Typhoon Maysak caused significant flooding in Guangxi and disrupted local snake farms. Meteorological authorities anticipate above-average rainfall in northern China, including Beijing, with forecasts of four to six typhoons, surpassing the typical annual average.
Taiwan, frequently in the path of Pacific typhoons, registered its highest monthly rainfall in over a century in Taipei during June. Recurrent downpours inflicted substantial agricultural losses estimated at more than NT$330 million (approximately $10.2 million) according to the island’s agriculture ministry.
Scientists and disaster experts emphasize that these extreme weather patterns are consistent with projections related to human-induced climate change. Warmer global temperatures increase the atmosphere’s capacity to retain moisture, leading to more intense precipitation events. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has highlighted the elevated risk of flooding in monsoon regions across South, Southeast, and East Asia and glacier melting in the Hindu Kush Himalaya area.
Richard Betts, head of climate impacts at the UK Met Office Hadley Centre, noted that warmer air produces stronger storms and heavier rainfall as a direct consequence of fossil fuel-driven carbon emissions.
Humanitarian organizations involved in relief efforts, such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, have urged governments to invest in local preparedness and mitigation measures. Dr. Hosam Faysal, head of the IFRC delegation in Afghanistan, underscored the urgent need for proactive strategies ahead of anticipated climate events like El Niño to prevent further loss of life and reduce suffering in vulnerable communities.
