Fabio Capello has emphasized the critical importance of medical staff at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the unprecedented scale and challenging conditions of the tournament. Set to be the largest World Cup in history, the event will feature 48 national teams competing in 104 matches over 38 days across North America.
Capello, the former England manager, highlighted the demanding physical environment players will face, particularly noting the heat and humidity typical of a North American summer. He stressed that the role of team doctors in managing player health and recovery will be vital throughout the competition.
Drawing on his recent experience attending the Club World Cup in the United States, Capello pointed to the difficulties teams encountered coping with heat and the toll of extensive travel. “The temperature during the game, to recover the energy after the game. It will be the work of the doctors to reintegrate the energy,” he said. Capello also acknowledged the complexities posed by extensive flights and variable climates during the tournament, describing the situation as “really, really interesting” and “difficult.”
As the tournament approaches, the role of medical personnel in maintaining player fitness amid grueling schedules and environmental challenges is likely to be a focal point for teams aiming to perform at their highest level.
