Since launching its first Fairtrade wine bottle in 2004, the Co-op has established itself as the world’s largest retailer of Fairtrade wines, with over 20 million Fairtrade-labelled bottles sold to date. These wines, sourced from countries including Chile, Argentina, and South Africa, contribute to social development projects such as clean water initiatives, community facilities, and educational programs, benefiting more than 1.7 million farmers and workers in low-income regions.
The Fairtrade certification signals adherence to ethical production standards, ensuring that purchasing these wines supports better conditions for producers without compromising on quality, enjoyment, or affordability. Ellie Pinfield, the Co-op’s wine buyer, highlighted the retailer’s commitment to offering wines that are accessible, good value, and rich in character. “We look for wines that are approachable, great value and full of character – bottles that shoppers can confidently pick up and enjoy, that tell a story about where they come from,” she said.
Within the Fairtrade range, the Argentinian Malbec continues to be a popular choice among consumers, combining quality with positive outcomes for producers. Beyond Fairtrade options, Portuguese wines—particularly those in distinctive blue bottles—have gained traction, along with dry French rosés and Crémant, valued for providing sparkling alternatives at reasonable prices.
The Co-op attributes its ability to maintain affordability to longstanding relationships with trusted producers, facilitating direct sourcing. “Working directly with trusted producers and maintaining relationships built over many years enables us to offer great value quality wines,” Pinfield explained.
Among her personal recommendations, Pinfield cited the Co-op Irresistible Primitivo, a smooth and fruity red from southern Italy, suitable for casual meals such as pizza nights and seasonal autumn menus. She also expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming November reintroduction of the Fairtrade Bonarda Malbec, a previously award-winning wine noted for its exceptional value.
Highlighted within the Co-op Fairtrade selection are six wines that exemplify quality and distinctive character:
1. Don David Blend Of Terroirs Malbec (£9, 14%) – An Argentinian Malbec featuring ripe black fruit, pepper, spice, and a complex finish marked by earthiness.
2. Co-op Fairtrade Torrontes Chardonnay (£7.50, 12.5%) – A lively white wine from Mendoza, Argentina, characterized by pear, apple, melon, tropical fruit, and lime notes.
3. Welmoed Fairtrade Rosé (£8.75, 12%) – A light, medium-dry rosé from Stellenbosch, South Africa, offering red fruit, apple, and floral flavors.
4. Trivento Fairtrade Malbec (£12.75, 12.5%) – An Argentinian Malbec with raspberry, plum, cherry, and vanilla tones culminating in a smooth finish.
