Authorities have charged an unlicensed spa operator in Riverdale with homicide following the death of a woman who received an injection of a popular anti-aging substance. Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55, who runs the Bereshit Lifestyle Center in the upper Manhattan neighborhood, is accused of administering a treatment containing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to Elizabeth Baron, 27, who later suffered cardiac arrest and died in July, according to the New York Police Department.

Rojas Cabrera, licensed to practice medicine in the Dominican Republic but not authorized to do so in the United States, was initially arrested and faced charges of reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession. Those charges were filed shortly after his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court on July 20. However, prosecutors recently upgraded his charge to homicide in connection with Baron’s death.

The treatment Rojas Cabrera administered has gained popularity, with public figures such as Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber endorsing its use. NAD+ injections have become a trend in some wellness circles for purported anti-aging benefits, contributing to increased demand.

Prior to this case, Rojas Cabrera’s record includes two earlier arrests, one of which involved attempts to import medical supplies illegally into the United States. Despite the serious nature of the charges, he was released without bail after his initial court appearance in July and remains free pending further legal proceedings. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Elizabeth Baron’s death.
